Sheikh Al Albaani on true love

Questioner: Someone who loves a person for the sake of Allaah, must he say, “I love you for the sake of Allaah,” to him?

Al-Albaani: Yes, but loving [someone] for the sake of Allaah has a huge price, only very few people pay it. Do you know what the price [to be paid] for loving someone for Allaah’s sake is? Do any of you know the price?

Let whoever knows give us the answer.

Someone present: Allaah’s Messenger ﷺ said, “There are seven whom Allaah will shade with His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His …” one of the categories mentioned are two men who love each other for Allaah’s sake, who get together for that reason and part for it too.

Al-Albaani: This is correct in and of itself but it is not the answer to the question, it’s an approximate definition of loving for the sake of Allaah but not a conclusive one.

My question was what is the price that two people who love each other for the sake of Allaah must give one another? And I’m not referring to the reward in the Hereafter. What I’m getting at from the question is what is the practical proof that two people love each other for the sake of Allaah? Because two people may love each other but their love is nominal, not real.

So what is the proof of true love?

Someone present: “That he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”

Al-Albaani: This is the characteristic of love or [at the very least] one of the characteristics of love …

Someone else: Allaah said, “Say: ‘If you love Allaah, then follow me and He will love you.’” [Aali-’Imraan 3:31]

Al-Albaani: This is the correct answer to another question.

Someone present: Maybe the answer can be found in the authentic hadith, “There are three things if found in a person, he will experience the sweetness of faith …” one of which is two people who love each other for Allaah’s sake.

Al-Albaani: This is the effect of loving someone for the sake of Allaah, [that you find] a [certain] sweetness in your heart.

Someone present: The Most High said, “By Time! Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” [SurahAsr 103]

Al-Albaani: Well done. That is the answer.

And an explanation of that is that if I really love you for the sake of Allaah I would persist in advising you, and you would do the same. Persevering in advising one another is very rare between those who claim to love each other, this love might have some sincerity in it, but it is not complete, because we try to make an allowance for the other, afraid that the other person will become angry, that he will flee … and so on.

It is in light of this that [you can see that] the cost of loving someone for the sake of Allaah is that each person shows sincerity towards the other by advising him, always and forever telling him to do good and preventing him from bad—he is more constant in advising him than that person’s own shadow is close—for this reason it has been authentically reported that when parting from one another, one of the habits of the Companions was that one of them would read to the other, “By Time! Indeed, mankind is in loss. Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.” [Surah Asr 103]

The Advice of Shaykh Abd Al-Muhsin Al-Abbaad Al-Badr To Those Who Rush To Make Rulings on others

Question:

Is there any advice for some of those students of knowledge who rush in making rulings upon others and obligate that which should not be obligated and inflate some issues which cause differing and in fact broaden differing?

And some of these are issues wherein there can be difference of opinion yet within these issues among the students of knowledge some of them exaggerate in censuring the opposer and it may even be the case that this is spread on some websites which then cause fitna among the students of knowledge.

Answer:

It is obligatory on every Muslim, and on the student of knowledge, to fear Allaah, Mighty and Majestic, and to be preoccupied with seeking knowledge and obtaining it and to know the way, or ways, that the Kibaar ’Ulama traversed such as: Shaykh Bin Baaz, Shaykh Ibn ’Uthaymeen, Shaykh ash-Shinqeetee and Shaykh al-Albaanee. Meaning: that a person has to safeguard and know what those Kibaar ’Ulama were upon in being preoccupied with knowledge.

As for the condition of a person being preoccupied with qeela wa qaal and following mistakes or searching out mistakes and warning from people on account of “he has such and such” then such a preoccupation makes people stay away from knowledge and to become preoccupied with that which is not befitting to become preoccupied with.

A person should only safeguard benefitting from knowledge and referring to it, and if an error is committed by a person, if the person is from Ahl us-Sunnah and from those who are preoccupied with knowledge, then such a person is neither to be abandoned nor warned against. Rather he is to be benefitted from and informed of his error and likewise his error is to be warned against. As for him being abandoned, censured and warned against then this is neither the way of justice nor of attaining knowledge.

Because if Ahl us-Sunnah was on this way then it would mean that they would bit by bit disappear and none of them would remain according to them! Rather, it is upon a person to safeguard attaining knowledge and be preoccupied with knowledge and not to become preoccupied with qeela wa qaal because those who become preoccupied with this do not attain knowledge and do not become preoccupied with knowledge, they only become preoccupied with qeela wa qaal.

No benefit at all is gained behind this and only harm is gained by them speaking about others. Being preoccupied with these issues which are not befitting to be preoccupied with, and which are not befitting for a person to preoccupy his time with, cuts off the route to benefitting from others who have good and are preoccupied with knowledge.

Question:

Some presentations are established to show the wounds of the Muslims in Palestine and other places, and they contain pictures of the wounded and those killed, and sometimes they are presented by means of video, and the reason for that is to encourage the Muslims to give charitable donations to their brothers. So is this act permissible?

Answer:

This act is not appropriate. It is not permissible to establish pictures for the injured. However, the Muslims should be called to give charity to their brothers, and they should be informed that their brothers are in bad circumstances, and that bad things are happening to them from the doings of the Jews, without them being shown pictures and pictures of the wounded people.

This is because this contains the matter of utilizing picture making, and it also contains undertaking a burden that Allaah, the Most High, did not command. It also contains weakening the strength of the Muslims, because when you present before the people pictures of Muslims that have been mutilated, or with their body parts cut off, then this is what frightens the Muslims and makes the Muslims afraid of the deeds of the enemies. And what is obligatory is that the Muslims do not show weakness, and that they do not show the calamities, and they do not show these matters. Rather, they should conceal those matters so that they do not weaken the strength of the Muslims.

{72} and beautification… rather kibr is something in the heart… it is to reject the truth from the one who brings it and to look down…
{73} upon others… but as for wearing what is nice, good, beautiful, then this is from beauty… the arrogant one can be arrogant whilst
{74} wearning worn out clothes… and a person can be humble whilst wearing beautiful clothes…
{75} I advise you also (a third trait) with rifq (gentleness, softness)… gentleness between yourselves, to those whom you invite to Allaah
{76} and likewise gentleness towards the non-Muslims, except the one who argued with falsehood… gentleness is not shown in something
{77} except that it beautifies it.. and the Messenger said to Aaíshah, O Aaisha upon you is rifq for it is goodness all of it…
{78} And he also said: “Verily Allaah is rafiq (gentle) and He loves rifq (gentleness…” and once Aaishah responded to a jew who said
{79} to the Messenger: as-saamu alaykum (death be upon you), she said, “as-saamu alaika wal-la’an” so the Messenger said: Upon you rifq…
{80} and he explained that it is sufficient to say back “wa alaykum” — and the Allaah said: Do not argue with the People of the Book…
{81} except with goodness except those who are unjust amongst them…(29:46)… so those who are unjust then sternness is shown…
{82} so the people of Islaam are deserving of rifq, and from those who are deserving the most are his relatives and from those
{83} who deserve it the most are his direct blood relations (parents, brothers, sisters) etc. So gentleness (rifq) is goodness, all of it.
{84} you bring the hearts of the people together when you are gentle, merciful they will love you, turn to you, listen to your speech…
{85} Allaah said: By Allaah’s mercy were you gentle with them, but if you had been coarse and hard in heart they would have disbanded…
{86} from around you…(3:159)…So mercy,gentleness with everyone is a desired, requested affair, because its fruit is good, beatiful…
{87} so if you are gentle, merciful, people will come to you.. The Prophet visited a Jew whose son would serve him… the son was…
{88} lying on the bed… and death came to him.. the Prophet called him to Islaam and the boy loved Islaam from what he saw of the Prophets
{89} manners… but he feared his father… so he looked at his father… and his father said: “O son, obey Abu al-Qaasim (the Prophet)”
{90} So the Prophet said: All praise is due to Allaah who saved him from the fire… so he became a Muslim, why? Because of what he saw…
{91) from the Prophet… Anas served the Prophet for 10 years and he never got angry with him not even once…! Never said once to
{92} to him for a thing he did not do, “Why did you not do it” and for a thing he did “Why did you do it” – not once in 10 years.
{93} … so this is rifq (the third quality) which is gentleness, so I advise you with this, and we finish with this amount…
{94} Shaykh ended his tremendous advice here on three qualities a) sidq (truthfulness) b) tawaadu (humility) c) rifq (gentleness).
