The consensus of Ahlus Sunnah regarding three principles related to Allah’s Attributes

Selected pearls from the books of the People of Knowledge and Fiqh

The consensus (amongst Ahlus Sunnah) which has been conveyed regarding three principles related to Allah’s Attributes

The First Principle: Regarding Allah the Most High’s Attributes, there is no place for the intellect (in deriving) them.

Al-Haafidh as-Sijzee mentioned in his book “Ar-Radd ‘ala man Ankara al-Harf wa as-Sawt”, pg. 121: “The Imaams have agreed that the Attributes are not derived except by way of refrainment” (i.e.refraining from affirming an Attribute for Allah until there is proof).

The Second Principle: Belief in the Attributes of Allah is by affirming their literal meaning not figurative.

Al-Haafidh Ibn ‘Abdil Barr mentioned in his book “at-Tamheed”, 145/7:

“There is a consensus amongst Ahlus Sunnah that the Attributes (of Allah) are affirmed, all of them, which have come in the Qur’aan and Sunnah and believing in them and understanding them according to their apparent meaning, not figuratively, except that they (Ahlus Sunnah) do not establish the ‘how’ of these Attributes nor do they establish or determine the reality of them.”

However, Ahlul Bid’ah, the Jahmiyyah and Mu’tazilah – all of them – and the Khawaarij deny them (Allah’s Attributes) and they do not understand any of them according to their literal meaning.

Those who deny Allah’s Attributes also claim that whoever affirms them, then he is one who has likened Allah to His creation and conversely, those who do so are considered from amongst the people who negate the One Who is worshipped according to those who affirm Allah’s Attributes.

The ‘Allaamah al-Maqreezee mentioned in his book “al-Muwaa’idh wal I’tibaar bi Dhikr al-Khutat wal Aathaar”, 188/4:

“And all of them (Ahlus Sunnah) have narrated understanding the Attributes as they have come.”

The Third Principle: The literal meaning texts of the Attributes are known to us in light of their linguistic meaning and they are unknown to us with regards to the ‘how’ of these Attributes.

Al-Imaam adh-Dhahabee mentioned in his book “al-’Arsh”, 195/1 whilst commenting on the statement of Imaam Maalik: “The ascension of Allah on His Throne is not unknown (its known linguistically) and the ‘how’ of it is incomprehensible”:

“And what Imaam Maalik said is what the texts have come with and this is what ALL of the Salaf were upon.”

Summary in Tweets of the Lecture by the Noble Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Mohiuddin

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Summary in Tweets of the Lecture delivered at the Madinah Dawrah – 11thRajab 1435 (10th May 2014)

by the Noble Shaykh Abdur-Rahman Mohiuddin (hafidhahullaah)

{01} Shaykh Abdur-Rahman: Bisimillaah, praise of Allaah, salat and Salam upon the Messenger, in this blessed hour on this day…

{02} … we will remind ourselves with verses from the Quran and ahaadeeth from the Sunnah of the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam).

{03} First, all creatures, Jinn, Men, black, white, rich, poor, every last one of them are slaves of Allaah… He is the King …

{04} .. above His Throne, nothing overcomes Him, He is the owner… creating all of you is like creating just one of you…

{05} So this is the affair of Tawheed, if Allaah entered all of them into the Fire, it would have been with His justice…

{06} and if He entered them all into Paradise it would have been a favour and bounty from Himself.

{07} and from his mercy…. If all trees were made into pens and all oceans were made into ink, they would all expire …

{08} yet the speech of Allaah would not end… one cannot extol and praise Him with enough words… they would expire…

{09} It is obligatory upon all to show uboodiyyah to Allaah, even a non-Muslim is a slave to Allaah involuntarily, because he sleeps …

{10} … he must sleep, it is determined for him… so he is subservient without choice from this angle… he obeys these laws

{11} Verse: “Allaah has given everything its creation and thereafter guided it” (20:50) …

{12} Verse: “All that is in the heavens and earth comes not except as a slave to Allaah..” (19:93).

{13}: Hadeeth: If you ask, ask only from Allaah. Hadeeth: If all of mankind gathered together to harm you, they could not harm you …

{14} … except with what Allaah has already written for you.” And this is way of Prophets, they were put to trial…

{15} And likewise scholars of Islam such as Imaam Ahmad. Trial appeared in his time, a great trial in a time when the Islamic state …

{16} … was the greatest state in the world… in Bagdhad, the capital. The khaleefah wanted to kill Imaam Ahmad. Imaam Ahmad..

{17} at the same time he was fighting against Rome, and Ahmad was brought in chains, the khaleefah wanted to kill him, he was brought…

{18} and was due to be killed in the morning… and then he supplicated and in the morning, news came, that Mu’tasim, (khalifah) had died

{19} Likewise Ibn Taymiyyah, he was imprisoned, but he remained steadfast upon Sunnah, way of Salaf… he did not wrong others…

{20} … it is from the Tawhid of Allaah, that you fear Allaah, thus the affair requires tarbiyah (cultivation), ta’leem (education)…

{21} … Imaam Ibn Baz, Allaah the Exalted, brings out and plants men, He brought out this man, Ibn Baz, who would read, teach…

{22} … so Allaah will protect and preserve this deen… and all we can do is to remind those who will fear and take admonition…

{23} So you remain firm on the truth, do you know what is an asad, a lion! There are some people, factions who are like lions…

{24} … (as in their threatening nature)… but you have to stand firm… attempts were made on the life of the Messenger three times…

{25} This is my last advice, this last word, I ask Allaah accepts my giving of this advice to you… that we learn the rulings of the deen

{26} in gradual steps… stepwise, just as the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) would teach the companions…

{27} that we evaluate ourselves every day… how have we profited, how have we benefited, what have lost, what mistakes have been made…

{28} just like a trader evaluates his business, profit, loss etc.. and how he can improve and so on…

{29} So similarly, a person evaluates himself daily, his relation with his wife, children, his brothers etc… how is he profiting …

{30} through his faith… do not consume haram, do not deceive and lie (he who deceives is not from us, hadeeth)…

{31} You should rectify the people, you are an example for people, fear Allaah, Yusuf (as) said, “Verily I fear Allaah…” an example for us

{32} With this amount the Shaykh sufficed jazaahullaahu khayral-jazaa. The Shaykh is around 70 years of age, white beard, in good health…

{33} He urged everyone to take the advice seriously and to implement it … out of great concern…

{34} all as fatherly advice … may Allaah bless the Shaykh and grant him a long life, ameen.
