The Condition of the Salaf in Ramadhaan – Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

The Condition of the Salaf in Ramadhaan
Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan

I have some questions; the first question: what was the state of the Salaf As-Saalih, may Allaah have mercy upon them and be pleased with them, in anticipation of this great month? How was their guidance? How was their character and their conduct? The second matter, O eminent Shaykh, how does the Muslim prepare to take advantage of these nights and days which he is now living in; preparation by way of knowledge, by knowing the rulings of fasting and knowing the nullifiers of the fast and its rulings? Some of the people are heedless of these things so they do not understand the affair of fasting and they also do not have the obligatory understanding of the affair of the fast, has the Shaykh noticed this matter? May Allaah reward you.

In the name of Allaah the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Wa Alaykum As-Salaam wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh; may Allaah bless you. Regarding that which you have drawn attention to, from these two great matters; the first question is regarding the condition of the Salaf in the month of Ramadhaan. The condition of the Salaf, as it is recorded in the narrated books with chains of narrations from the trustworthy people (narrating) from them is that they would ask Allaah the Mighty and Majestic to make them reach Ramadhaan before it entered; they would ask Allaah to make them reach the month of Ramadhaan due to what they knew that it contained from abundant good and general benefit. Then, when Ramadhaan entered, they would ask Allaah to aid them upon righteous actions therein. The when Ramadhaan ended they would ask Allaah to accept it from them. As Allaah the Mighty and Majestic says:

وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ ٦٠ أُولَئِكَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ ٦١

“And those who give that (their charity) which they give (and also do other good deeds) with their hearts full of fear (whether their alms and charities, etc., have been accepted or not), because they are sure to return to their Lord (for reckoning). It is these who race for the good deeds, and they are foremost in them [e.g. offering the compulsory Salât (prayers) in their (early) stated, fixed times and so on].”(Al-Mu’minun 23:60-61)

They would strive hard in doing actions, then worry would afflict them, after the action, as to whether their action was accepted or not. That was due to their knowledge of the greatness of Allaah and their knowledge that Allaah does not accept except that (action) which is done purely for His face and correctly in accordance with the Sunnah of His Messenger from actions. So they would not purify themselves, and they would fear that their actions would be rendered null. So (worry) that they (the action) will be accepted was weightier with them than (even) the performance of them. This is because Allaah the Mighty and Majestic says:

إِنَّمَا يَتَقَبَّلُ اللَّهُ مِنَ الْمُتَّقِينَ

“Verily, Allaah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious).” (Al-Ma’idah 5:27)

So they would devote their time within this month, as we have previously mentioned, to worship and would minimize actions of the Dunyaa. They would spend their time sitting in the houses of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic and they would say: We are safeguarding our fast and we will not backbite anyone. They would read the Mus-hafs and study the Book of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. They would safeguard its time from squandering. They were not heedless or negligent as many of the people are today. Rather, they would preserve its time; the night, by standing (in prayer) and the day by fasting, recitation of the Qur’aan, the remembrance of Allaah, and righteous actions. They were not negligent therein of (even) a minute or a second, except that they would put forth therein righteous actions. This is the first question.

Joy because of the Coming of the Month of Ramadan, by Shaikh Fawzaan

Joy because of the Coming of the Month of Ramadan, by Shaikh Fawzaan

So in brief, this is a tremendous opportunity in your life O Muslim, so take advantage of it and ask Allaah to assist you upon righteous actions in it, and ask Allaah for acceptance and an increase from His bounty. For indeed the one who reaches this month of Ramadan and Allaah enables him to achieve benefit from it, then Allaah has bestowed upon him a magnificent blessing that nothing can equal.

By Allaah, the millionaires, owners of skyscrapers and realtors cannot equal this. By Allaah, nothing can equal up to this month for the one who Allaah, Exalted and Most High, grants success in it, even if he doesn’t own anything from this worldly life, not even a penny. If Allaah bestows upon him (success) in this (blessed) month, then he is the one who truly profits and he is the rich person in reality. The rich person is not the individual who possesses the dunyah but spoils his aakhirah (afterlife); (if this is his case) he is poor and destitute and has ruined his dunyah and aakhirah.

Our tongues quietly mumble: We want Ramadan and we love it, while our actions shout the opposite!

Ramadan is Less than Two Months Away!
For those of us who are drunk and drowning in shirk, sin, and innovation, it is time to rehabilitate and cleanse ourselves with Tawheed, obedience to Allah and adherence to the Sunnah of His Prophet Muhammad

Let us rehabilitate ourselves now so that once Ramadan enters, our hearts and limbs will worship Allah alone, setting up no partners with Him!

Let us rehabilitate ourselves now so that once Ramadan enters, our limbs will only perform the actions that are pleasing to Allah!

Let us rehabilitate ourselves now so that once Ramadan enters, our actions will be in accordance to the Sunnah of our beloved Messenger Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم), and so that we will only follow the way of his companions; the best of mankind after the Prophets and Messengers!

Rehabilitation and cleansing takes time, and what better time than now!

The Salaf us Saleh used to anticipate and prepare for Ramadan way before it entered, and they used to supplicate to Allah, asking Him to allow them to reach it.

What about you?! What is the extent of your anticipation, preparation and supplication?

Or will you be from amongst those who foolishly wait until the first day of Ramadan to desperately attempt to rectify yourself while you are still drunk with shirk, sin, and innovation?! Consequently, you may only become sober once the month is over.

Allah, the Most High, says:

((وَاتَّقُوا يَوْمًا تُرْجَعُونَ فِيهِ إِلَى اللَّهِ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ))

{Fear a day when you will return to your Lord, then everyone will be rewarded based on his deeds and they will not be oppressed.}

(Surah al Baqarah: 281)

And He, the Most Glorious, said:

(( وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى ))

{And whoever fears standing in front of his Lord, and forbids himself from his desires, his abode will be Paradise.}(Surah al Naziyat: 40)

He, the Most Merciful, further said:

{Has not the time come for those who believe that their hearts should feel humbled at the remembrance of Allah and at the truth which has come down to them, and that they should not become like those who were given the Book before them and the term was prolonged for them, but their hearts were hardened, and many of them are wicked} (Surah al Hadid: 16)

May Allah guide us all! Our tongues quietly mumble: We want Ramadan and we love it, while our actions shout the opposite!

Our actions say: No, Ramadan! Do not approach us! We do not want to awaken from our sinning dreams and transgression! We do not want to become sober from our intoxication of shirk, innovation and sin! Please do not disturb us!

My dear brother and sister begin cleansing yourself from now, so that once Ramadan enters, your hearts and limbs will easily accept the abundant amount of good. This is how one truly prepares and benefits for the coming of this blessed month.

(Advice on how to cleanse oneself will soon follow insha Allah)

Saying an equal number of Rakaahs of Tarawih should be adhered to through out the month of Ramadaan

Q. It was asked that a person offered Tarawih as eleven Rak…ahs (units of Prayer) in the first 20 days of Ramadaan, and in the last 10 days of Ramadaan, he offered ten Rak’ah at the beginning of the night and ten at the end of it, followed by three units of Witr (i.e. a total of 23 Rak’ah). The question is that should the person had prayed eleven Rak’ah or twenty-three Rak’ah through out the month of Ramadaan or what he offered is acceptable?

A. Tarawih Prayer offered in Ramadan is a stressed Sunnah (supererogatory act of worship following the example of the Prophet) performed by the Prophet (peace be upon him) who led his Sahabah (Companions) in offering it for many nights, and then he discontinued it lest that it should become obligatory on them. His Sahabah did it after his death (peace be upon him), and it is still offered to the present day.

As for the number of its Rak…ahs, there is no fixed authentic number. Some people claim that it is twenty-three; others claim that it is thirty-six; others claim more; and others claim less. During the era of …Umar, the Sahabah used to offer twenty-three Rak…ahs in the Messenger‘s Mosque (peace be upon him).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never used to offer more than eleven or thirteen Rak…ahs, whether in Ramadan or at any other time. He (peace be upon him) did not fix a certain number of Rak…ahs for the people in Tarawih and Qiyam-ul-Layl; he (peace be upon him) used to exhort them to perform Qiyam-ul-Layl, especially in Ramadan, saying, Anyone who spends Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Decree) in Qiyam, out of Iman (Faith) and Ihtisab (confident anticipation of Allah‘s Reward), will have their past sins forgiven. He (peace be upon him) did not fix a certain number of Rak…ahs.

This depends on the way a person offers Salah (Prayer); those who offer long Rak…ahs can offer a small number of Rak…ahs like what the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to do, while those who offer short Rak…ahs out of mercy on people can offer a large number of Rak…ahs like what the Sahabah used to do during the era of …Umar.

There is nothing wrong in increasing the number of Rak…ahs in the last ten days of Ramadan in comparison to the first twenty days, and dividing them into two parts: one that is offered in the beginning of the night in the form of short Rak…ahs for Tarawih, and another that is offered in the end of the night in the form of long Rak…ahs for Tahajjud (optional late night Prayer). The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to exert himself more in worship during the last ten days of Ramadan than any other time. When the last ten days of Ramadan began, he (peace be upon him) used to gird himself for the purpose, stay up the night, devote himself to worship with abstention from conjugal intercourse, and wake his family up to seek to attain Laylat-ul-Qadr (the Night of Decree).

A person who forbids increasing the number of Rak…ahs at the end of the month than its beginning contradicts the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Salaf (righteous predecessors). We should follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Rightly-Guided Caliphs and urge the people to follow it, not spread claims that decrease their interest in devoting themselves to worship in Ramadan.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and Companions!
